The Family of Arthur Price and Elizabeth Ann Davies, Abercanaid and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen

Arthur Price (1890-1951) was born on May 16 1890 (on parish register) to Thomas James Price and Rosa Madia Thomas. He was born at Wern Cottage, Llanfihangel Talyllyn, Breconshire (now Powys). Arthur was a colliery coal tipper living with John Walter Price in 1911. He married Elizabeth Ann Davies (Annie) (1894-1949) born 36 Gethin St, Abercanaid on January 21 1894. She was the daughter of Timothy Davies and Mary Williams. They were at 35 Nightingale St. Abercanaid in the 1921 census with three children and lodgers in a total of 5 rooms. Arthur stated that he was a colliery miner at the Gethin Pit.

Arthur and Annie moved to the Welsh-speaking villages of Cwmgors and Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen in West Glamorgan. Arthur died on October 14 1951 at 14 Neuadd Rd, Gwaun Cae Gurwen. Annie died at 2 Colbren Square, Gwaun Cae Gurwen on June 12 1949. Both are interred at Llanfair churchyard, Cwmgors. Arthur and Elizabeth had 5 children:

  • Vivian Rees Price (1917-1949) born at 35 Nightingale St, Abercanaid on January 25 1917. He died at Mount Pleasant Hospital, Swansea on December 18 1949 and was interred at Carmel Cemetery, Gwaun Cae Gurwen.

  • Mervyn James Price (1918-1981) an Electronics Engineer born March 17 1918 at 35 Nightingale St, Abercanaid. He served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in Malta, North Africa and Italy during World War 2 and the Allied Control Commission in Germany after the war. After marrying in 1947 he lived at Colbren Square, Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen and Cwmamman Road, Glanaman. Married Nora Jones (1923-2014) in 1947. He died at the West Middlesex Hospital, Isleworth on April 29 1981 while visiting his son and daughter-in-law and was interred at Hen Bethel, Glanaman, Carmarthenshire. He is survived by his son, daughter and grandchildren.

  • Selwyn Price (1919-1969) born at 35 Nightingale St, Abercanaid on July 5 1919. He married Dilys May Evans (1926-2002) at Rhydyfro, Pontardawe, Glamorgan on June 30 1945. He died at Morriston Hospital, Swansea on February 14 1969. He is survived by son and grandchildren.

  • William Dervyl Price (1922-1964) born in Cwmgors, Glamorgan on September 8 1922. Married Iris M Morgans (1925-196?) in Swansea on March 23 1946. They lived at 14 Neuadd Rd, Gwaun Cae Gurwen. William Price died in Swansea Hospital on September 4 1964. They had one daughter Elizabeth Noleen Price (1947-2009) born Glanaman hospital, December 26 1947, passed away suddenly at her home in Spain, leaving her husband and also children and grandchildren in the UK.
